Christine
Collins, certified youth minister at Our Lady of the Woods, is being
awarded the Vincentian Award through the Catholic Charities South West
this year. She is in good company; this award was previously presented to
Bishop Gorman, Fr. Ed Upton, Mary Jane Nogal, Dorothy Schindler. It is
awarded to a person who embodies the spirit of St. Vincent DePaul. She is
being recognized as a model of educating young people about the virtues of
service to the poor. This is a great honor for Christine, and in a way for
all of us, who bring the good news to our young people through service
education, that her work is recognized by an organization like Catholic
Charities. The award will be presented on August 19 at the Doubletree Inn,
Alsip.

Liturgical
Training for Teens Saturday, April 5, 2008
10:00am – 2:30pm
St.
Christina
A Liturgical Ministry Formation
day for teens. This one day
experience will begin with a general overview of the Theology of Ministry,
followed by separate sessions for Ministers of the Word, Eucharistic
Ministers & Cantors. Overall,
the day promises to give teens a well grounded perspective of the meaning
and purpose of ministry, as well as a clear understanding of the
significance of the call we receive at Baptism.
This formation day is open to high school teens of all ages.
Please be aware that while this formation time will generally
prepare young people for service to the liturgical community, it is
necessary for each parish to follow up with training specific to their own
worship space.
What is World Youth Day?
In 1985, Pope John Paul II invited young
people from around the world to join
him in Rome on Palm Sunday to observe the United Nations’ International
Year of Youth. At this gathering, the Holy
Father initiated World Youth Day. In addition
to the annual celebration of World Youth Day, the pope invites young
people from around the world to gather with him approximately every other
year for the international gathering of
World Youth Day.
World Youth Day is a day to celebrate
youth (younger and older teens), in all
of their diversity and goodness, and to encourage these young people to
lead the church both now and into the
future. The bishops of the United States, wanting
to place full attention on the youth of our nation, voted to move the
celebration in the United States from Palm Sunday to the 30th Sunday in
Ordinary Time, this year celebrated on
October 28th. During the is weekend, parishes
are invited to bless their young people, involve them in all aspects of
Mass, affirm their leadership, and invite
them to use their gifts in service to
the church and world.
A Message from the Pope…
Each year, the pope prepares a message to
the young people of the world. The
2007 statement can be found on line here
