Pat Redington and Frank Koob comment on the current PBS documentary series "The War" produced and directed by Ken Burns. They introduce today's program topic "Faith and War." They they welcome their first guest, Cdr. John Hannigan, a Marine Corps chaplain and priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Father Hannigan has just spent 19 months in the combat zones of Iraq.

Our conversation with Fr. Hannigan continues, as we discuss the impact war participation has on soldiers in harm's way. Fr. Hannigan relates his observations as he worked with the men and women. We also ask him how being in this situation has impacted his own faith.

We change focus a bit with our conversation with our next guest, Bob Lesniak, who served 12 months in Vietnam in 1966-67 beginning at the age of 20. Bob relates how his experience of the war zone influenced him at the time, and even now 40 years later. Bob is a staff member at the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry.
