“Ministry in Multicultural and National/Ethnic Parishes”
Research Paper by Kenneth Johnson-Mondragon of Fe Y Vida, 2008 available via this link www.emergingmodels.org/article.cfm?id=44. The growing multicultural diversity of parishes in the U.S., impacting every diocese, was evaluated for implications for pastoral leadership as part of the Emerging Models of Pastoral Leadership Project. The research findings - a snapshot of the current strengths and challenges, the hopes and fears of leaders in multicultural Catholic parishes throughout the country - were the basis for Fr. Robert Schreiter’s April workshop on Ministering Effectively in Culture Not Your Own. The insights offer a glimpse into the cultural dynamics of many contemporary parish communities.

Dear CCIR Supporters:

The past couple weeks my prayers have been full of gratefulness as I've witnessed the amazing initiative, leadership and vision of a group of Priests for Justice for Immigrants, Sisters and Brothers of Immigrants, lay leaders and CCIR staff who are organizing our first interfaith prayer service, "We are God’s Family", which will be Thursday May 29th 6:30pm (details below).  It is beautiful to see how God uses His people with all kinds of talents, resources, networks, connections, etc. Aware of these offerings, I praise God for the privilege to work with people ready to respond to His spirit of love and solidarity - Thank you!

The intent of the May 29th event "We are God's Family", which will include a street procession, is to give a visible sign of our presence and support to our brothers and sisters who are undocumented immigrants along their journey towards immigration reform. Many times we as humans need the assurance that we’re not alone, God is with us. We as people of faith are the visible sign of God’s presence and love to His people. It is an honor to represent Christ and walk with Jesus and undocumented immigrants on the journey to Emmaus.  Significantly, this is the first time we are intentionally working with other religious congregations. We hope we will come to know each other better and continue working together on behalf of immigrants.

We invite you to participate in the various May events to be in greater solidarity with the struggles of immigrant workers around the world and immigrants in this country. As described below, such opportunities include providing water to the May 1st marchers, advocating for religious access to detention centers (House Bill 2747), and of course your active involvement in bringing people from your congregation, school, family, group, etc. to the May 29th event.

Thanks for your faithful support to the work of the Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform.

Peace,
Elena

Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform

What is the Catholic Campaign for Immigration Reform?

A record high of more than 34 million foreign-born persons reside in the United States. In the past 20 years, about 23 million newcomers have arrived.  This immigration growth has had a profound impact on the Church, with as many as 300,000 Catholics arriving each year from all regions of the world.

At the same time, U.S. immigration laws and policies have become increasingly restrictive and even harmful to some immigrants and asylum seekers. Between 8 and 10 million people in the U.S. live on the margins of our society for lack of proper immigration documentation. U.S. residents who want to reunite with close family members must often wait 10, 15, and even more years before visas for their relatives become available. Border enforcement strategies employed along our southern border have resulted in thousands of deaths and asylum seekers who flee persecution in their home countries and look for safe haven in the U.S. often find themselves detained as criminals for lengthy periods of time.
